RPGamer has been covering RPGs since 1998, with the current version of the site launched in 2018. Due to the wholesale change in our back-end and systems only certain content created from 2018 onwards has been carried over to our new site. For what it’s worth, the Donjon de Naheulbeuk audio series is not that funny. I have friends who liked it, but I think I chuckled once or twice in the first two episodes, and did not continue.
Trails of Cold Steel II is my JRPG july pick and, even though I’m not planning to finish it in July, it’s going rather well! I might go back to Bravely Second as well, but for some reason that game can’t hold my interest for more than 10 minutes at a time.
Speaking of Cold Steel, that series could be an interesting anime adaptation…
JRPG July: Almost have the support log wrapped in Three Houses, just missing five conversations and will get four of them knocked off on the run I’m playing now.
Question of the week: Most of my selections already have anime adaptations (Persona 4/5, Danganronpa, now The World Ends With You), but I think you could get multiple seasons out of Trails of Cold Steel as bobbywatson mentioned upthread.
I suppose for my JRPGJuly game, just look to our weekly write-ups heh. Generally, I’m enjoying Tales of the Abyss.
As for an RPG made into an anime adaptation, maybe The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky? That way I can skip over to Cold Steel.
Trails in the Sky did get an anime OVA: https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/the-legend-of-heroes-trails-in-the-sky
I don’t really recommend it to anyone but superfans. It mostly covers the second game and even then it’s compressing a 70-hour game into 50ish minutes. It’s there if someone is desperate to see animated Trails, but it doesn’t really work as a substitute for anyone else.
QotW: I’d much rather see anime adaptations of western stuff, because a) the culture clash is more interesting; and b) most JRPGs seem to have anime adaptations already (although, Dark Souls…). Fallout and The Witcher were the first to come to mind – and I think the latter is already happening. However, my nomination goes to Planescape Torment. That could get pretty freaky.
QOTW 1) I guess I’m gonna be the contrarian and say I don’t want any game to be turned into an anime. Whenever they do they either don’t follow the source material and make up their own garbage (but happily keep the name to dupe fans to look at it) or they’re forced to cut out so much that it loses its charm or meaning. Sorry, that’s just been my experience and opinion.
QOTW 2) JRPG July is going well. Been live streaming Xenoblade Chronicles DE and on my third attempt you actually finish the game. Got 90% done on Wii and 60% done on 3DS, and I’m happy to announce I’ve surpassed my 3DS stopping point and haven’t started feeling the fatigue yet (there’s far too much optional stuff that a completionist like me has to do for the sake of completionism 😅)
Dragon Quest 4 is the Anime I want to see. Complete with all the regional dialects and such that were added for the DS version!
As for JRPGJuly, I wasn’t feeling the return to an MMO in Dragon Quest X, but a quick pivot into Grandia II has me completely enthralled! Hopefully by the time you read this and record, I’ll have finished it off and found more JRPGs in my “unfinished” pile to work on.
