I preferred turn based games back in the day because that’s what I had access to, and I prefer turn based games now because I’m old and my reaction times were never good.
As it pertains to SRPG Studio, does it shoehorn mind control into the game’s plot even if it wouldn’t be warranted? If it truly is a Kaga-developed tool, I would not be shocked in the least.
Picking between turn-based and action is like choosing your favourite between wine and chocolate. I enjoy both, but sometimes one tastes better than the other at times. I love the thoughtful pace of turn-based and the flow state of action – generally I flip between them roughly 50-50. Maybe 60-40 in favour of turn-based, if only because they tend to be longer games.
I like to alternate between action and turn-based games – I honestly wouldn’t want one without the other. Like picking between wine and chocolate. Love the flow state of a good action game, but I also like being able to take my time and be rewarded for thoughtful play in turn-based combat. Probably spend more time playing the latter, though – simply because the games tend to be longer than action titles.
QOTW: I think I prefer action slightly more over turn based. The “Tales of” series, FF7R, Xenoblades, Monster Hunters, SoulsBournes, Dragon’s Dogma, and Mass Effects of the world seem to do it a little more for me than others (despite my love of traditional turn based Final Fantasy, which is still enormous).
The only reason I could come up with as to “Why?” is I think it feels a little more visceral (not sure if that’s the right word) which feels more fun to me? Like…
“*I’m* doing those attacks” vs “I selected a command and watched *them* do those attacks.”
I prefer turn based combat in most cases. I find it easier to have time to decide what to do next. Another reason I prefer turn based combat is that I tend to be bad a dodging.
I play more games with turn-based combat, but I like both about equally. I like thinking strategically with turn-based combat, but I also like to run around and hit things with action combat.
I tend to alternate between action and turn-based games, or have one of each on the go at any one time. Love the flow state of a good action game, but really appreciate being to plan and strategise a try -based battle. Both have their own satisfactions and I really wouldn’t want to go without either. They’re like wine and chocolate – don’t make me choose!
I was raised on Dragon Warriors and FFI and have stayed 90% turn-based. Now that I complain about being old all the time, it’s two-fold: it’s what I was raised with and what my brain can handle. I’m pretty slow-paced in general, and I need the time to think about what’s next and to avoid getting killed because my wife and kids are bugging me about something or another. If I sit down to play a game, I’m putting my 3DS or Switch on standby every 5-10 minutes, so I prefer games where it just waits for me to do so, and when I open it back up, it’s standing still waiting for me as well.
